How to measure for an appliance.
Write every figure in millimetres and photograph the space, services and route. Give the installer the narrowest measured dimension.
- 01
Measure width in three places
Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom. Keep the narrowest figure and note trim, skirting or hinges that reduce the usable width.
- 02
Measure height across the opening
Check left, centre and right, measuring from the highest point of the finished floor. Adjustable feet help level an appliance; they do not make a short opening taller.
- 03
Measure usable depth
Measure to the front edge of the cabinet, then subtract space taken by sockets, taps, waste pipes, hoses or valves. Record whether a handle or door must sit proud.
- 04
Open every door and drawer
Allow for hinges, adjacent walls, handles, dishwasher door swing and fridge drawers that need the door opened beyond 90 degrees.
- 05
Measure the delivery route
Check gates, doorways, hall turns, stair width and lift dimensions. Compare packed dimensions as well as the bare appliance where the manufacturer provides them.
- 06
Confirm the model installation sheet
Use the full model number to verify ventilation, side and rear clearances, service positions, cabinet cut-outs and any qualified-installer requirement.
Common appliance dimensions vary by type and model.
These manufacturer examples help you recognise the broad formats. The model specification and installation drawing always win.
Washing machine dimensions
Samsung’s UK guide shows 850 mm height and 600 mm width across example small, medium and large machines, while example depth ranges from 400 to 650 mm. Capacity does not tell you depth.

Beko describes full-size dishwashers at about 60 cm wide and slimline models at about 45 cm. Its examples are 82–85 cm high and roughly 55–60 cm deep, with plumbing and door swing still to allow for.

Samsung groups examples into models up to 600 mm wide, 700–750 mm wide and 900 mm or wider. Width is not capacity, and every model still needs its own side, rear and door-opening clearances checked.

Check both the appliance body and the cabinet niche, including plinth, furniture-door, hinge and ventilation requirements.
Retail dimensions may exclude projecting doors, handles and services. Look for a dimension drawing for the exact model.
